The Prospecting Question That No One Wants to Answer Honestly
What do you do? As an online networker I get asked this question relentlessly! I understand why people want to know however. It is a part of your life and much information can be gleaned from the answer to this prospecting question. You can determine if this person is one you want to work with or if this is someone you should avoid. Let's face it, not everyone is cut out to do what you do. Even though every one could. Asking this question is trained into every network marketer. In fact most people ask the question as a point just in causal human conversation. It's almost unconscious to ask. How you answer this prospecting question makes a huge difference, when interacting with humans.
I am an online net-worker as well as an Instagram Guru. The internet is a wonderful place filled with automation. However you will at some point have to step out and actually talk to people.
When you do guess what they want to know?
Here is how I fend off this question.
When I get asked I simply answer it and follow up with another question that moves the conversation forward. For example:
New Person: “What do you do?”
Me: “I help people learn to market online properly, so how was that vacation to Hawaii that you posted pictures of?”
Now, if the person that I just met is interested in learning more about marketing online he is going to ask me about it. He will ask exactly how I do that or what does that entail? Now I know exactly where to steer the conversation. Perhaps we'll play footsie for a while longer until I have enough rapport to ask another qualifying question or come back to this person later.
This prospecting question is a bear and how you answer it is a difference maker! If you give up the goods on everything you do.. well your committing verbal vomit.. and that's gross. Not to mention that nearly every human has internet access and will know more about what you do before you ever bridge the topic. It's also very useful to leave a bit of mystery there.
